How To Progress
Aug 25, 2024Life's like a Video Game, and this is how you win.
Are you skiing for fun while you're young or are you trying to make it your life?
Most people say they can't make it, because they didn't grow up in an academy like these young guns.
So you ski for years with big goals & dreams, wanting to try new tricks, wanting to progress your skills.
And times spent doom scrolling Instagram & TikTok watching others land those tricks.
"Next season" turns into 5 seasons and you've seen very little progress.
You end up getting caught in the narrow ski vision of "I'll ski as many days as possible" (without a goal or direction...)
Missing proper training for yourself leaves room for injury and a loss of purpose...
What was once a firey passion of yours is now "going through the motions".
It's sad...
But it doesn't mean that's the only way to be a "ski bum".
It can seem daunting when so many people have years of experience on you... I get it.
But if you're not gonna try because you're scared someone has more experience than you. You've already failed.
It's an excuse a lot of people make because it's the easiest way out (not only in skiing..)
You see, our brains are wired to choose the path of least resistance.
So when you look at going after your dreams, you start to make excuses. An easy one right now is seeing highlights of a few great skiers on Social Media and writing yourself off.
That's a confidence issue if we want to get deep. But you build confidence by achieving small goals, over and over...
Let's talk about creating that ideal version of you, that goes for the gold.
Circle back to life as a video game.
The above scenario is, unfortunately, how most people go about life.
If you're familiar with video games you have non-playable characters (NPC).
These are bots placed in the game, going through the motions mindless.
While you the hero have objectives, raise your stats, complete missions, awhile the NPC envies you...
These games are addictive because you feel as if you're living that ideal version of yourself.
Because you have a road map laid out, there's checkpoints along the route, and you see the end goal.
That's how you look at life, that's how you look at skiing.
Instead of getting narrow ski vision, start prepping yourself now for progression.
Write down 4 tricks you want to land this season.
Decide how you can start training now.
Gym? Proprioception? Trampoline? Skateboarding?
When you go skiing tell yourself "I'm gonna throw 4 front swaps today because I've been training".
Create a progression checklist for yourself, or grab the one on Slope Academy.
Looking at a list on paper, starting small, and executing is how you'll make progress fast.
Remember the goal here is to be the hero in your own life, because this is your only shot.
Whether you're 13 or 24, it's not too late to work towards your goal.
Even more, Bruce started when he was 17... SEVENTEEN!
You know what else? He was only skiing on the weekends because the hill was 2 hours away...
That's right, only skiing 2 days a week and he still threw down.
How'd he use this to his advantage?
He was more developed than the younger kids, so his body had the strength to do what he needed.
And when he got to the hill those 2 days, he was hungry for it.
He'd show up with a list of tricks, and like a madman consumed by an obsession he'd throw them until he landed them.
No excuses.
Whether your goal is to make it to the X Games, Super Unknown, or grow a following on social media and work with brands.
It's not too late.
There's a lot of rad skiers out there, who, unfortunately party to much and let their talent go to waste.
That's actually about 95% of the competition.
So let me ask you...
If you're hungry and put time into it starting now, do you think you couldn't outshine these athletes?
I do.
Let's run through a quick recap of all that:
Don't waste your life as an NPC. This is your shot.
It's easy to make up excuses because our brains are wired to take the easy route.
The more we achieve small wins, the more our brain rewires to push ourselves. It's addictive.
It's not too late to start. Ever.
If 95% of the competition isn't sure how to stretch before skiing, do you think you have a chance?
You can pursue this on your own, Bruce's YouTube page has loads of tutorials and Ian's IG has loads of workouts.
If you decide you want specialized coaching, help creating a plan, or a community of sick skiers.
